Programs – St. Bede CYO

The mission of the St. Bede Catholic Youth Organization Board is to offer all, who are eligible, the opportunity to participate in all the CYO sponsored programs. Participation, in the athletic events, is to be considered primary. “Competition and winning” are by-products of participation and are secondary.

Participation, complete honesty and fair play, demonstrated by coaches of unquestionable Christian and Moral Character provide youth with direction to grow in the image of Christ. The St. Bede Catholic Youth Organization Board will proclaim the Word of God in the parish by promoting youth sports for the entire St. Bede’s Community with an emphasis on our youth learning the primary rules and fundamental participation with teammates, and promoting sportsmanship.

Fall Sports

Cross Country

St. Bede’s Cross Country (abbreviated XC) is open to all eligible athletes in grades 2-8. XC athletes are divided into gender-specific Age Group teams. Unlike most other CYO sports, the teams are not solely based upon grade; rather, the teams are based upon age and grade. All athletes compete in weekly meets at Philadelphia's Belmont Plateau against other CYO programs within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Age Group and Distances:

Sub-Novices (race 1.25 miles): All athletes ages 7-8
Novices (race 1.86 miles): All athletes ages 9 or 10
Minors (race 1.86 miles): All athletes ages 11 or 12
Cadets (race 2.46 miles): All athletes ages 13 or 14

Key Dates:

Registration Opens: May/June
Practices Start: August
Last CYO Meet: Last Sunday in October

NOTE: After the CYO season, the team then has the option to compete as Archdiocese travel club level against other clubs nationally.

Soccer

St. Bede’s Soccer is open to all eligible athletes in grades K-8. The K-1 athletes participate in weekly training clinics followed by weekend, in-house games. Starting in 2nd grade, athletes are divided into travel teams that play against other CYO programs within Region 19 and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Intramurals (Coed): Kindergarten – 1st Graders
2nd Graders (Coed): 2nd Grade
Novice (split by gender): 3rd – 4th graders
Junior Varsity (split by grade): 5th – 6th graders
Varsity (split by grade): 7th – 8th graders

Tryouts for JV and Varsity: July/August
Assessments for 2nd Grade / Novice: August
K-1 1st Practice: September

Assessments and tryouts are used to gauge the best level of play for each athlete. No athlete is "cut" from St. Bede's CYO. If an athlete is registered prior to the deadline, he/she will have a team to play on.

Volleyball

St. Bede’s Volleyball is open to all eligible female athletes in grades 7-8. This is a travel program where the teams play against other CYO programs within Region 19 and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Winter Sports

Basketball

St. Bede’s Basketball is open to all eligible athletes in grades K-12 (boys) and K-8 (girls). The K-3 athletes participate in weekly training clinics (called Skills and Drills) designed to improve basketball technique. Starting in 4th grade, athletes are divided into travel teams that play against other CYO programs within Region 19 and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Skills and Drills (split by gender): Kindergarten – 3rd Grade
4th Grade (split by gender): 4th Grade
Junior Varsity (split by gender): 5th – 6th graders
Varsity (split by gender): 7th – 8th graders
High School (split by grades): 9th-10th and 11th-12th

Track & Field

St. Bede’s Track & Field is open to all eligible athletes in grades K-8. Track & Field athletes are divided into gender-specific Age Group teams. Unlike most other CYO sports, the teams are not solely based upon grade; rather, the teams are based upon age and grade. All athletes compete in weekly meets against other Region 19 teams with qualifying athletes being given the opportunity to compete against teams from around the the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

Cadets: All athletes ages 13 or 14
